Digital Photography Workshop
Bruce McKaig
This half-day workshop is designed to introduce participants to the digital arena, from camera use to the computer screen for printing or emails. Topics include understanding basic camera functions, image size and formats, quality control with Photoshop, and preparing images to be sent to the printer or out on the web. Participants should have their own digital cameras (with manuals), but this is not necessary. The objective of this workshop is not to develop a deep understanding of this workflow but to orient each student towards their first level of control in the exciting but confusing digital world.

771 Introduction to Black and White Photography
This introductory class covers the basics in black and white photography, including camera use and exposure, framing and composition, film processing and printing in the darkroom. Activities are designed to demystify the process of photography to help students gain control over the quality of their work. In addition to studio and darkroom work, the class includes videos and slide presentations from historical and contemporary photography. Students should have a 35mm camera with manual exposure control and will provide their own film and printing paper, to be discussed in class. Chemistry is provided.

This intermediate level class is designed for those who have some prior experience but who want to strengthen their skills and understanding of photography. Activities include more advanced exposure issues, difficult lighting situations, alternative film processing, and printing techniques. Students will be encouraged to define a specific body of work or project they wish to explore in class. In addition to hands-on work, the class includes audiovisual presentations on photography. Students should have a 35mm camera with manual exposure control and will provide their own film and printing paper, to be discussed in class. Chemistry is provided.

This entry level class is designed for those with little to no experience in the world of digital photography. Activities will cover the basics of camera use, scanning, image manipulation and basic printing, and using Photoshop and other appropriate software. The Digital Photography Project
This class invites participants to define a photo project they will pursue for the session. Possible projects include themes -- landscapes, portraits, still lifes, etc, or they can be events to be documented -- family reunions, activities in DC, etc. They could be a story the participant wants to tell through photography, or a portfolio of work for possible exhibition or publication. The class works on refining and describing each project and developing the technical skills necessary to do and present the work. Additionally, the class will look at contemporary and historical examples of photo projects. This class would be appropriate for photographers with their own digital camera and an understanding of how that camera functions.

Creative Breakthroughs: Mixed Media Painting

In this workshop, we will explore expanding your creative expression in mixed media by utilizing art materials, sources of inspiration, and techniques in new ways. Making art is FUN-getting back to childhood where you had complete freedom to experiment-quieting your inner critic-starting a painting in 4 different ways that give you access to starting them in hundreds of ways- finding your own voice- finding inspiration, etc. The workshop will be intense! There will be homework! But the results will produce fuel to keep you in motion after January. This is an opportunity for both beginners and experienced artists who may need to be unblocked. What is your next challenge in knitting? Is it knitting a sweater? Is it mastering gauge? Is it altering patterns? Something else? The goal of this class is to support knitters as they tackle their next goal in knitting and help them to grow their skills and confidence. Knitters will choose a challenging project for themselves, and take it on with the instructor's assistance and support. Knitting can look baffling but is easy once a few basic skills have been mastered. The goal of this class is to demystify knitting and to launch each student onto a productive knitting path. Beginners will learn basic skills: the knit stitch, the purl stitch, cast-on, bind-off, increase, decrease, and basic cables. Additionally, students will learn to repair mistakes and dropped stitches. Intermediate students can refresh their basic skills, but will focus on a knitting project that will advance their knitting knowledge/skills, with the support of the instructor.
