700-20 Water Media (Acrylic and Watercolor)
Alan Braley
All great paintings have 5 essential elements: color, shape, space division, style, and technique, but technique is not the ultimate goal in painting. The goal is to make art. In this class, students will explore the world of color and shapes and how to apply paint. Not all paintings are going to hit the mark either technically or expressively, but if your goal is clear and your resolve certain, you will enjoy the journey every step of the way. We’ll explore transparent watercolor, create interesting shapes, capture good space division, and develop each artists’ individual painting style. Students will work at their own levels. You’ll find out how to adjust and exaggerate color and temperatures for impact, and design a dramatic composition around big shapes of color. Materials list will be provided at the first class. For students with some previous painting experience.

These renovations are key to the revitalization of the Arts Workshop’s photography program.   The new photography program kicks off on January 10th with the opening of the 2006 Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Juried Photography Exhibition.  Works from photographers from 15 states and the District of Columbia were chosen for the show and the public is invited to join us on Tuesday, January 10, 2006 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm for the opening reception.

Jonathan Darr, Director of the Arts Workshop sees the opening of the show as a great opportunity to herald the new opportunities for photographers both new and seasoned.  “We received more than 600 images for and selected about 60 for the show.  With such great interest in photography, both digital and darkroom, we look forward to serving the community with a new and improved facility.  We’d love to see the community at the Open House and the Reception for the Photo Show.  Great things are happening at the Arts Workshop and we will be building a community of photographers and those who love photography.  Come on by!”

The Arts Workshop’s new photography facility should be up and running in February.  It will consist of a seven-station darkroom, a classroom, and a digital studio.  In addition to the photo show and reception, the Arts Workshop is welcoming several distinguished photographers and photography writers for a lecture series throughout the month of January:
